In the last twenty years, the field of Spanish American literature has dramatically increased by the diversity of authors that are read and studied. One of the manifestations of this trend has been the publication of works by authors of ethnic minorities, who, in representing their experiences, have expanded the concept of Spanish American culture. The three novels I analyse in this essay -Teresa Porzecanski's Perfumes de Cartago (1994), and Rosa Nissan's Novia que te vea (1992) and Hisho que te nazca (1996)- articulate the adjustment process of Sephardic women in Uruguay and Mexico. At the same time, these texts constitute a valuable document of Sephardic life in these countries, virtually unknown to Hispanic readers.
