Translation and commentary on the text of Megillat Ta‛aniṯ: thirty five verses in Palaestinian Aramaic which mention a series of memorable dates on which fasting is prohibited. This is an ancient document, cited in the Mishnah, of great historical and linguistic interest, and it is also the oldest and most reliable source of the history of the struggles between Judaism and Hellenism. Its composition was apparently started by order of Alexander Jannaeus, whose victory at Chalcis (92 B. C.) is mentioned, and it was continued in the period of the early Hasmoneans. The present version dates from a period prior to the destruction of the second Temple.
