In gratiam Judaeis: Entrelazando un mensaje de redención a partir de un préstamo iconográfico

Este artículo se ocupa del modo en que una decoración figurativa marginal aparentemente única en el Maḥzor de la micrografía catalana (Jerusalén, NLI, Heb 8º6527) ofrece una lectura multivalente de la redención. Esta imagen, que puede leerse a un nivel más amplio en conexión directa con el texto que adorna, incluye además relaciones sinérgicas entre el texto que da forma a la micrografía, la imagen que origina y el texto litúrgico al que adorna. Estas relaciones revelan la familiaridad del escriba-artista no sólo con el contenido iconográfico de estos modelos, sino también con los escritos morales y místicos de las culturas circundantes. La complejidad de esta imagen revela una manipulación consciente y erudita de estos elementos para visualizar un mensaje escatológico buscado intencionadamente para reflejar el punto de vista judío y el concepto sefardí de la redención. El complejo contenido visual y textual de esta imagen subraya y sugiere la traducción por parte del escriba-artista de tratados retóricos a manera de sermón visual, bien conocido en la época. Su intencionado “trenzado” cultural contemporáneo –una acción que connota un compromiso consciente y premeditado– sugiere que, con toda probabilidad, sus lectores comprendían el arte de las culturas circundantes y conocían textos profanos, tratados populares y obras teológicas y místicas.
