The converso Luis de Torres, official interpreter in the first expedition of Columbus, was a trujamán or secretary of Arab letters of the Governor of Murcia, Juan Chacón, when he was called to the service of the Crown. Torres would be one of the thirty nine men left by the discoverer at the Navidad fort. The present Jewish historiography claims this enigmatic personality as a guide and leader of the considerable group of conversos enrolled in the expedition; a better knowledge of his personality and conduct will undoubtedly explain some of the mysteries still unsolved about Columbus and his great enterprise.
