Among the Sephardic newspapers published in the Ottoman Empire and in the Balkans, El Meseret of Esmirna, whose director was Alexandr Ben-Guiat, was one of the most lasting, as well as one of the most significant. This paper attemps to show and describe this newspaper within the context of the Ottoman Jewish society at the end of the nineteenth century, and the beginnings of the twentieth century.
