In this article the author identifies and examines all the examples of Mekhilta de Rabbi Ishmael in which the hermeneutical technique ’ên kĕṯîḇ kaʼn ’êl·la’ is applied. This analysis will enable us to establish its specific use in the midrash. All the examples can be splited in two groups according to the element commented: 1) textual problem or detail and, 2) words or expresions without any problems in their context. The function of this technique is also different in each group: it has a textual function in the first group and an exegetical one in the second.
