Abstract

The typical image of Spain created after 1492 would be kept by the modernising Ottoman Sephardic Jews on the eve of the 20th century, as shown by new literary genres such as journalism. Indeed, in newspapers dealing with historical and cultural aspects of contemporary Spain, the Sephardim seem unable to tranform the old stereotypes, fearing the consequences this change could have in the perception of their own identity. A series of articles about the «disaster of '98» published in the Salonican newspaper El Avenir, are an example of this situation.
