Loanwords in the Portuguese of the Spanish-Portuguese Jews of Amsterdam in the First Half of the 17th Century

This study analyses some lexical particularities of the language of the ‘Portuguese nation’ of Amsterdam found in three documents: two registers of the burial ground at Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, respectively the Livro de Bet Haim do Kahal Kados de Bet Yahacob (1614-1630) and the Livro de Bet Haim do Kahal Kados de Talmud Torah (1639-1648), being the third document the Livro dos termos e as[s]entos da Companhia Santa de dotar orfa[n]s e donzelas (1616). Foreign words (specially, Dutch) are studied, and it is provided a more detailed analysis of the words esclavim, balio, escotete, placa, pataca, pascoa / pasquoa, envoluntar, atuendo, balotar, buselo and bala.
