Abstract

Our aim in this paper is to study the two quotations taken from the Kitāb al-Zabūr of Ḥafṣ b. Albar al-Qūṭī, included by Mosheh b. ʿEzraʾ in his Kitāb al-muḥāḍarah wa-l-mudhākarah. The comparison of both quotations with their respective original texts shows that the transmission of Moshe b. ʿEzraʾ’s work underwent changes in the process of transmitting the text, but above all
it informs that Moshe b. ʿEzraʾ himself, or perhaps a later copyist, adapted the original Arabic text of the quotation corresponding to the translation of Psalms 54:22 (55:22 of the Hebrew text) to the reading of the Hebrew text, although with incidence in the metric of the verse in some cases. Furthermore, these two quotations teach us that the use of Ḥafṣ b. Albar al-Qūṭī’s introduction and translation of the Psalter, completed in AD 889, was still in vogue during the first third of the 12th century.
